It is a difficult issue for me, because it is hard to "split the baby" -- and I don't basically believe in discrimination or profiling, yet I believe it is ultimately going to be necessary in these circumstances. And therein lies the problem; they have found the soft underbelly of America -- the freedoms that we expect as a result of being Americans are the same ones that allow them to attack us. Even where there is the ability to mildly compromise freedoms on the margin to help (e.g., the Patriot Act), they [the terrorists] can count on the Western Left to tamp them down. As Steve Emerson said, I think it is going to take a much bigger attack than 9/11 to get the point across to many of us.
