I think they face a threat like we do from the south. When the numbers get sufficiently large they become a swing political group that distorts public policy. We can see it here in the pander to the Latino vote - the politicians are in full pander for the votes. The Europeans will - or likely do - face a similar problem. For instance - they will have a difficult political time taking an anti arab stance on key issues.

As for assimilation - if the percentages stay low - yes. If the percentages continue to grow it will be more and more difficult - especially if the groups chose to group together in their living areas.

Frankly, we are far more lucky than the Europeans. Our illegal immigrants share a lot of our values.
