Florida and Michigan believed the DNC wouldn't dare enforce the sanctions in two big swing states, so they would get an early place on the calendar and still have the results counted.

They were wrong.

There is also an intense legal web once elections are set. Changing them requires new legislation and state approval and all that, so changing back may have been difficult or impossible.

The irony, of course, is that sticking to the original dates would have made them both very important in the process as it unfolded.

Whatever the final solution is, it won't be enough to change the delegate equation for Hillary. If she doesn't get virtually all the remaining supers, she is done.
