Imagine if Bush had been honest about the possible/likely consequences of invading Iraq:

"We suspect that tens or hundreds of thousands of Iraqis will die in the post-invasion turmoil. Oil exports will drop by a third. Two million Iraqis will be driven out of their country, and more than two million more will be driven out of their homes inside the country. The capital itself will become a walled-off warren of religious enclaves. Car bombs, militia murders and sporadic conflicts will affect most major urban centers from time to time, some for years on end.

But we decided here in Washington that the sacrifice is worth the gains for US strategic interests. Oh yes, the tab will be hundreds of billions of dollars with no cap."

Sam;

Fewer US troops getting killed and wounded. Violence levels down to 3 or 4 year lows

Perhaps the country and the people there are becoming exhausted from fighting and are willing to bury their hatreds for each other. I hope so, but remain skeptical. Doesn't change the stats that I posted.

My hatred of the Iraq conflict is that we have taken our eye off our enemy in Afghanistan. We are no closer to victory in Afghanistan than we were when we started, despite the horrendous cost - especially to our military. .......What is it we are trying to win in Iraq? Fewer Americans being killed? Not much of a win if you ask me. Winning for me would be NO Americans killed and Americans coming home and the stats I listed improving. Iraq taking care of Iraq.
