My argument wasn't that Al Qaeda has never been stronger (although one could argue that point) - It was that Bin Laden's stature in the muslim world has never been greater (which is a given as it is inversely proportional to the stature of the US in the muslim world, which is at an all time low).

My other point was that the hold of militant islamic philosophy on young, impressionable muslim minds has never been greater. I erred in using Al Qaeda synonymously with militant islam, it's just one flavor.

I agree Al Qaeda itself maybe weaker in certain regions due to a backlash against sectarian violence.
