Think of an array of solar equipment the size of a state, in the middle of a desert, think of all the support equipment and transmission equipment, and support/maintenance personnel you would need, all likely far away from population centers. Than figure in the difficulties in transmitting all that energy. Also remember you only get power in the day (and much less on heavily overcast days).

Massive amounts of solar energy shine down on the earth. We can collect this as thermal energy (heat) or photovoltaic energy (electricity).

Basically the 3 issues are collection, storage, and transfer of the energy and we are continually making progress in all three areas, although collection is the biggest factor. As a visual aid think of all the sail that is required to harness the wind for sailing ships.

Currently photovoltaic cells have an efficiency of about 12.5 % and they’re expensive.

This is a solar car racing site, it takes about 60 square feet of solar cells to produce one horse power.
