Revulsion at gas prices unites americans of all stripes. Whether you are an evangelical christian, a neocon or a left winger we are once again all united by an exogenous force. As we discovered last week, there is no easy or short term fix for this problem. The candidate who taps into this phenomena might ultimately be the winner. Neither mccains gas tax break or obamas gratuitous attacks on the oil companies meets this test. More that the gas tank is moving toward empty in the US. There is no more equity to tap. We may not be in economic depression but we are almost back to the 70s gas lines that lead to reagan and make no mistake about it, reagan saved our collective arse by injecting optimism back into the american psyche. Can either obama or mccain rise to the occasion. So far no cigars for either of them (yet).

It costs me $65-70 to fill up........nearly twice what it cost last year to fill up at this time. Yeah, I have to stop on my way to the office... watching the needle approach "E" is getting irritating. What amazes me are those people who are standing in line for fast food or a bank, and who keep their engine idly. If you are in line for more than a minute, its better to shut your engine down. I do it all the time now but I see people letting their idle for 5 minutes or more........they are simply burning gas for doing nothing.
