Sure. We will ignore how Demming handed Detroit his design for quality stuff in the 1950s. What happened? Detroit ignored it, the Japanese embraced it, and the rest is, as they say, history. I'd be the last person to defend Detroit's ignoring Deming. However, that was 40 years ago. While I would stop short of saying they have "recovered" from that failure, Detroit has long since adopted Deming's techniques, so that clearly isn't the problem. To be fair, American automakers suffer from multiple problems. Back when GM took ownership of EDS, they got so tired of Perot's ideas they made him a billionaire just to get him off the board. They basically ignored him the way they did WED. But today, unions are the biggest problem the American automakers have. The market is there, the infrastructure, although archaic by some standards, is in place. The problem is you cannot build a car when Labor is in control of the place. American car companies are run by bean counters who can't see beyond the current quarter. Their labor costs could be zero and they still wouldn't be able to compete. Well, bean counters are necessary because it is all about the beans. But the truth of the matter is that Labor is running the companies, and that is certainly worse than having bean counters do it. You are blaming the wrong people. I have a reasonable understanding of the business. I think you don't.
