The price of the 3G, when you total up all the costs of owning the phone for two years, has been increased by over 100 bucks. JMHO.

Agreed, though my only real problem with it is that it was hyped as a price cut. People tend to get a bit disillusuioned when they figure out that it will end up costing them more.

OTOH, shouldnt a HSDPA version with GPS cost $100 more than the previous version? I know that the additional functionality is worth quite a bit more than $100 to me.

The increase might be $40 over 2 years - I think over $100 is too high.

The data plan will increase by $10/month = $120/year = $240/2 years

The iPhone is $200 cheaper. So the increase appears to be $40 over 2 years.

Of course if you buy the $300 iPhone, which is not equivalent to the iPhone available now, then it will cost over $100 more in 2 years.

Peter -

It's forty bucks more, but that's not really the point. People tend to look more at up-front costs. Shelling out $200 is a lot easier for a lot of people than shelling out $400. Yes, they pay a bit more over the course of two years, but it's not enough to make most people hesitate on the initial purchase.
