"No significant presense in the region"? That would have been before bin Laden was born or at least when he was a child.

The US had no troops or bases in Arab countries till Saddam invaded Kuwait.

Really? So the bases below don't count? Why?

And you forget that the 6th fleet plies ME waters on a regular basis.

History

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) began construction of the base in the spring of 1951. The USAF initially planned to use the base as an emergency staging and recovery site for medium and heavy bombers. The Turkish General Staff and the USAF signed a joint use agreement for the new base in December 1954. On February 21, 1955, the base was officially named Adana Air Base, with the 7216th Air Base Squadron as host unit. The site was later renamed Incirlik Air Base on February 28, 1958.

Al Udeid is among several US military bases in the Gulf area. Nearly 10,000 Army soldiers are at Camp Doha in Kuwait, and 4,200 troops are in Bahrain, headquarters for the Navy's Fifth Fleet. Several thousand are in Saudi Arabia and a few thousand in Oman.

None in any non-Muslim countries till Clinton sent troops to Kosovo.

The next commitment of troops to a Muslim country followed the 2001 attack.

Why would the US be sending so many troops to Muslim countries because of 9/11? After all, it wasn't a country that caused 9/11.

Brumar

The idiocy of Tejek appears to be getting worse rather than improving over time.

Apparently, he believed we had major military facilities in the region. I would have thought he would have picked at least that much by sheer osmosis.

He did catch me on one mistake - I forgot about Turkey, which is a NATO country.
