Hard to tell whether Friedman has a sense for something like the drinking water issue. But, as far as I'm concerned, he is getting to the large frame better than others I have read. The only thing missing from his frame is the question of the larger ME picture, that is how a complete breakdown in Iraq might embroil the entire ME.

But that looks less and less likely.

Whatever and however we withdraw from Iraq, the plan needs to make the probabilities of total breakdown as low as possible and involve as many of the ME countries as possible in reducing that possibility.
