I was listening to another protracted discussion of the Status of Forces Agreement we are trying to negotiate in Iraq. There are fundamentally different views on the role of the US there in the long-term, which boil down to, is this a sovereign country or a US-controlled and -occupied fiefdom?

I'll be curious to see how that ends since it could tell us a lot about our future role there. Could be the Iraqis eventually say fine, start shipping most of your troops home and we'll do things ourselves. That would be a relief for everybody.

Certainly our "allied" government there is not on the same page about the US role. Of course, I heard one statistic, 20,000 Iraqis being held by US forces, that probably doesn't amuse the local pols very much in terms of who is really in charge.
