The Feds have given permission, the state hasn't, although it's a very red state. Why? We've got a lot of very scenic land here in Utah, where the oil shale is. Oil shale mining is like strip mining, only worse. It destroys the land, and leaves piles of processed rock in it's wake. The people that want to mine the shale don't want to pay to restore the land. Much of the land here, redrock canyon country, would be un-restorable and ruined. Bernie Sanders was on TV a little while ago, essentially claiming that we don't need to drill, we need to limit oil company profits. Totally ignorant. I think they suffer, for the most part, from just being stupid.
