I think you can only try to build the best society possible- if people still want to die, I'm all for letting them. But we have to diagnose mental problems earlier, and do more to stop people who would harm others. I have absolutely no problem with people harming themselves, but when people harm others- society really needs to step in.

Obviously I'd prefer compassionate steps. I'd like to see a lot more mental health treatment available in this country, as well as more drug treatment centers. You shouldn't have to be rich to kick a substance abuse problem- be it illegal drugs, alcohol or cigarettes. I'd also like to see the government get in the fitness business- at least to the extent of setting up recreational centers that are worth using. Goodness knows not everyone can afford a health club.

Healthier people are less despondent people- so that's the way I would attack the problem. At the root of most problems are completely natural solutions- like eat better, get more exercise, make more human connections...
