One of the arguments against evolution (or technically against evolution being the main or only force behind the diversity of species, its not like the argument is generally that biological evolution doesn't happen at all), is that complex adaptations can't evolve if there is no benefit from making a partial step towards that adaptation. The article is asserting that this adaptation is not a simple one, and that intermediate steps toward it where not beneficial, but happened and were not selected out before further change resulted in an actual benefit.

Jerry Coyne is an evolution proves atheism type. He's massively overstating the implications of the mutations.

I don't know or care how many creationists there are. But I do know the anti-anti-evolutionists blow their threat to Science way out of proportion.
