Thanks, interesting article. Reinforces my sense that Brazil's first priority should be to consume more ethanol locally.

Honestly, all the tariffs and mandates have accomplished to date is to keep the price of ethanol higher in the U.S than they would have been otherwise, impairing it's ability to compete and develop a market. This is a useful chart (from AAA on comparative prices between fuels):

BTU-adjusted E85 (wtih tariff-protection) is currently 25% MORE expensive at the pump than good old unleaded. Of course, the floods and spike in corn prices have influenced this, but even if a consumer WANTS to do the right thing and not pay off Amadinejad, Chavez and Putin, he's gotta pay through the nose to do it! High gas prices were "supposed" to make corn ethanol competitive....but they didn't. Whoever takes over really should get rid of all of it, it's a policy failure and even bad poker players know to toss a losing hand.
