I wonder if the number next to "Mail" at the top of the page went up for you when I posted this. I'd guess that it didn't.

It did.

Let the price go up as supply fails to keep up with demand and then later declines.

Snug and cozy in your free market ideology, you are far more cavalier about this than I am. The free market can be a wonderful thing when you have what the free market wants, but it can be very cruel when others have what you desperately need.

Oil derivatives are a cost element in virtually every product and service we use. Gasoline is the lifeblood of our economy and culture. Oil is up over 600% in ~5 years, and due to our trade imbalances we are competing for this precious resource with other countries that are using our money to buy it.

The massive use of oil is a dead end for this country. Like any other threat to our way of life, terrorism or communism or whatever, we have to face this head on and make some important decisions. With oil up 600% in 5 years, what will it be up in 5 more years? What if there is a political disruption in supply? What if there is a natural disaster that disrupts supply?

We need to get started now, and the way to start is efficiency, as we move on to the longer term solutions of alternatives. There really is no other choice.
