koan. A pure democracy is very dangerous to the continuing existance of a country. The masses of people are given to excesses in opinion and direction. They can be charmed by a skillful orator. I think the Ancient Greeks proved that a more or less pure democracy doesn't work so well.

The US was set up as a representative democracy. The people ellect representatives and those representatives run the country. Certainly not perfect, but the process dampens out some of the excesses and (hopefully) the elected representatives are above average in experience, intelligence and ability.

When an inexperienced guy that is such a skillful orator comes on the scene it is a little scarry to see normally level headed people so charmed by nonspecific oratory.
