The 3 sections around our home were sold forward to the ethanol plant here at $5.60. With the loss, I understand the current $8.00 bu + at harvest will have to be covered...a loss of $97,000 per section, if $8 holds.

It sounds like you are expecting corn to go even higher. So what do you do? I don't suppose a farmer can declare force majeure and tell the ethanol plant it will have to wait another season for the corn. Perhaps it may be best to buy corn futures to limit the potential loss.

Why is the crop so poor in Nebraska? I guess I ought to know but I don't. I didn't realize the problems extended that far west.
