Well I guess if you're a LongIslandGuy, buying in the LI suburbs could make you happy. It's great that your aspirations are being fulfilled, and a nice neighborhood makes a lot of difference.

Personally, I was stuck doing a postdoc at Brookhaven Lab in 81-84, before we bought in White Plains, and I have to say I ended up with a lasting dislike of Long Island and the LIE.

The White Plains house went along with working at IBM Research in Yorktown, so White Plains was a pleasant commute up the Taconic but still close to actual civilization. I liked it much better than LI.

Of course, the SF Bay Area beats anywhere in NY IMO <G>.
