To the point and succinct I hope:Dear Senator Obama: I feel I was blindsided on Wednesday when you remarked that the US would have to "reconsider" imports of oil derived from Alberta's oil sands. A few points to consider: 1) Canada is the largest source of oil imports to the US, larger by far than even Saudi Arabia. 2) The U.S. currently imports over 65% of all the oil we use, and the proportion is growing larger every day. 3) If alternatives can be brought to use rapidly (wind, solar, nuclear) they will take years, perhaps 5-10 at a minimum to start to make an impact in any scale. 4) In the meantime the US will be competing with developed and developing nations for oil, particularly with China who's own imports of oil and oil derivatives are rapidly increasing (by at least 8-10%/annum. 5) Canada, although a staunch ally, is entirely aware that oil is a global market. Mr. Obama's statements caused a firestorm of protest and calls to accelerate development of an Alberta to British Columbia pipeline, for the purpose of expanding exports of Albertan oil production (including that derived from oil sands) that currently goes almost entirely to the U.S. I requests the Senator and his energy staff STRONGLY reconsider their position on this. Canada has been a loyal ally to the U.S. most notably in the energy arena. Frankly, we need them a lot more than they need us. Don't damage a relationship that is vital to US economic and security interests to make some minor political points with a group (environmentalists) who are already strongly in your camp. Sincerely, Patron Anejo
