Good point on the directed lighting Moom. People should wear hats with light emitting diode lamps directed at where they are looking, perhaps with some spread for peripheral vision to notice bats coming in from the side. Lighting the whole place is as silly as heating the whole thing.

My point about the manual labour was how little insulation one needs when putting out excess heat, which we always do as part of our exothermic DNA. When just sitting around indoors, one would need insulation everywhere, with eyes, fingers and face doing the necessary cooling. Breathing is cooling too, so it might be necessary to have a portable air pre-heater to breathe if it's seriously cold.

But really, the universe is made of energy and there's no shortage of it. So we could set huge spaces to the temperature we want if we could get the energy at the right price. Insulation and management of incoming sunlight is probably the best way to do that, rather than burning carbon.
