IMO, Obama needs to be much more aggressive in respect to a comprehensive energy plan that includes just about every option. He needs to make sure the voters understand that he feels their pain and outrage at the pump and I am not sure that is COMING THROUGH LOUD AND CLEAR at the moment.

He needs to expressly state that the fight for energy independence will be a multi-prong approach of solar, nuclear, wind, coal, etc... and he needs to repeat this everyday until the election, until the voters understand that there is a clear cut as to who is going to come out with a winner plan to save us from this current energy crisis.

Iraq is subordinate to energy right now.

"The China Syndrome" (co-starring Jack Lemmon and Jane Fonda) (1979) and the 3 Mile Island accident 12 days after the film was released and the meltdown there got us completely off-track on nuclear power.

Sad isn't it. 3-Mile Island really screwed us when it comes to nuclear power. If that had never happened, we might be where France is today. Did I just say that France is ahead of us in power generation? You bet I did. We're behind in almost every major technological metric now, after 8 years of Bush Jr.

Pal
I remember many years ago, an anti-nuke group at an airport. One counter protestor carried a sign saying "more people died in Ted Kennedy's car than from from nuclear reactors". (This was pre-Chernobyl). The fact that I still remember this indicates that this message was powerful. I have always felt we missed the boat on nuclear power. Unfortunately, you are right, it took four dollar gasoline to wake up so many "little minds" and given the lead-time necessary to expand nuclear power, even if we reduce the regulatory lag, it will be years to see any benefit from nuclear power. And these same "small minds" were suckered by politicians from both parties into the great ethanol farce.
