>>I would place a very large bet that this person would not know how to fix a one-cylinder lawnmower. Probably couldn't rewire a table lamp himself.<<

Do you know who "this person" is?

Andy Grove is a highly-respected engineer who helped found Intel Corporation, eventually rising to become Chairman and CEO. Even if his ideas seem extreme at first glance, his track record means he qualifies for a fair hearing of his proposal.

He certainly doesn't deserve cheap trash talk from an acerbic old grouch like you.

That's one you would likely lose. From his bio, he was a fab engineer. Those guys are creative in solving real life issues.
Add in the fact that he's an immigrant from Hungary, so I doubt that his whole life is isolated from the do-it-yourself world.

He's an engineer. Fixing stuff is our thing.

The fact that he rose to the top and now looks at big picture ideas that push reality won't negate his start in life. I don't think he is right on this one, but he may know more than we realize.

>>>Grove says the nation should consider ways of retrofitting the 80 million low-mileage pickups, sport utility vehicles and vans on the road to make them capable of running on both gasoline and electric power<<<

I thought this was an unusual statement, which is why I posted.

I will bet he can rewire a table lamp. I won't bet on the lawn mower engine.

A retrofit kit might be some form of this -
GM's Belt Alternator Starter Mild Hybrid system -

A certain amount of room under the hood will be needed.
Maybe the whole system can be done as an engine swap - remove old engine, place new engine with hybird system in car, hook up, pay $1200 for labor. $3000 for the new engine, the drive away 3 days later.
