McCain's record is strong enough to stand up to the smears.

Nobody smeared McCain's record.
It's just that spending a lot of years in prison is not a particularly relevant experience to governing. Maybe if he was leader of the prison choir or something he could point to that as leadership. Instead he he was in a position of total dependance upon his jailers. That's not preparation for the Presidency. That's not a smear, that's just his record.

The difference is in the quality of their own records. McCain's record is strong enough to stand up to the smears. Kerry's record isn't.

That's your biased perception. Both were "war heros" just for going. Getting shot down is not an accomplishment.
