my first grade teacher stuck her fingernails in my head for looking at her crosseyed

LOL-
It's funny what you remember from early days. I cheated ONCE in my whole life-- and got caught. I was in second grade. It was a spelling test, and the word was HORSE. For some reason, I saw my best friend's paper and she had HOUSE. So I changed mine. Apparently not with great subtlety, since my teacher caught me. She was wonderful, though. She took me aside and talked about trusting myself. How I was smart and shouldn't look to others for answers. It was a terrific lesson. Much better than standing me up and punishing me for cheating and saying I was BAD. Plus not getting a perfect grade was horrible enough for me.
That's my idea of building real self-esteem. Not this fake crap we started 20 years ago where we don't allow failure.
