The most effective way to control people or a nation is to instill fear: fear from foreign enemy occupying our country. And that's what Bush/Cheney did: Saddam Hussein had WMD and would destroy the US. And the Senate, the House and almost the entire nation bought their lies.

To be honest, I think if Powell supports Obama it has more to do with the fact they both share the same race. The African American's are rallying around obama because of the racism they have all had to endure during their life times (you can bet Powell feels it privately); and Obam makes them proud. One of the few times Supreme court justice Thomas voted in a sane manner was when the issue of lynching came up. It just came too close to his roots and I think affected him emotionally. As it should have. Interestingly, even though there is some tension between blacks and hispanics, hispanics are also supporting Obama and I think it is the same thing. Obama is a man of color and both African americans and hispanics have had to endure racism from WASPS for all of our history. So what hispanics and blacks share in common (racism) is a stronger pull than any differences they may have. Actually the same is true of women as well. Look how disappointed many women were that obama won. Hillary success was a big deal to them. Even my older daughter was sort of in that mind set. And she voted for obama-lol. Women have also suffered at the hands of White males for -------- ever. The times they are a changen. Maybe-lol.
