In 1991 it was a fall in oil prices. That would work here too.

In general, we (me as bad as anyone) are talking a lot lately about fundamental analysis -- the reasons for things past and for things to come.

However, I must remind us that this is a forum for technical pursuits.

The fundamental tenet of technical analysis and of Elliott is that:

Charts discount what can be known.

In almost all cases, news does not move the market. News comes after the fact.

Another related fundamental tenet is:

Charts move well before the underlying reasons become clear.

Charts always roll over (or start to take off) way before the fundamental (news) reasons become clear.

Let's not spend too much time speculating on the reasons for things. This must take a back seat to the charts.
