There was the solar water heater that was installed at the White House. The DOE was created and funded a a bunch of alt. energy projects. The stated goal was to have 20% of US energy needs to be supplied by alt. energy. One of the early projects resulted in the modern windmill. The first work to commercialize fuel cells and solar panels was also funded. Production of synth fuels from oil shale, oil sands and coal was also funded.
