Gina, AT THE TIME, it was obvious that Gorby was NOT carrying on as normal. It was funny how the USA carried on with the Cold War AT THE TIME. It was, of course, because the cash flow was highly desirable and turning it off would NOT suit a lot of people. Having an enemy to worry about is always crucial for funding militaries. China is using Taiwan to good effect, to stir up nationalism. Shroud waving is as old as the hills. I don't believe those running the USA were quite so stupid as to think Gorby was just more of the same, but there's room for that possibility. Condoleezza couldn't imagine as much as Osama's gang could. And STILL Osama hasn't been 'brought to justice'. AT THE TIME [and you can click back pre-war to see my posts] it was pretty obvious that there weren't any WMDs to speak of in Iraq. People are gullible and politicians and others use that to advantage. Mqurice
