"In retrospect, the policies were correct, but he failed to convince us of that."

Ha. Must have forgotten the "misery index".

"His approach to energy surprised me. Unlike most everyone else, he was saying stuff that made sense."

It did, but wearing sweaters, setting the thermostat too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer, driving 55, carpooling, along with the message that the time of American exceptionalism was over, just didn't gain much traction and attracted a lot of kickback. I thought the "humbleness" was part of his Christianity that he was trying and failing to convince Americans to follow.

If he could have somehow convinced us that we were in a struggle to break an addiction to oil, and gotten us all involved in it as a national cause, maybe it would have worked. He didn't have the necessary charisma.

and dont forget teenage amy carter who warned us of nuclear proliferation. In a two power world, she was the visionary on this subject. I remember laughing when i heard that not because it doesnt worry me but because i had confidence in the stability of the superpower world.I dont laugh about proliferation anymore. Bring back the USSR.
