"CJ, all of your assertions are based on government having the foresight that matches your 20/20 hindsight."

Umm, no actually. I am just using the discussion of the time. No hindsight involved.

"No room to simply let the free market do its thing."

Tenchu, the point was we were, and still are, vulnerable to the whims of other countries. The free market put us in that position. The idea was to try to radically change that. The free market doesn't do radical, you should know that.

If what happened when OPEC decided to turn off the tap wasn't a good reason to try to change the game, then what is?

Oh yeah.

Nothing.

"On 2 May 1982, known as "Black Sunday","

And what administration was in power in 1982?

Thanks for proving my point.

"Meanwhile I can provide links that both support and reject your assertion that solar was a "one billion dollar per year industry until the GOP pulled the plug":"

Well, you did a poor job.

From your second link.

Solar-energy champions say such a boost was needed 20 years ago, as the Carter tax credits were expiring. "The solar water heating industry instantly went from a billion-dollar industry to an industry that now installs, in the U.S., about 6,000 solar hot water heaters a year"

Which is what I said.

"No surprise that the link supporting your assertion comes from Mother Jones ..."

I didn't look at the Mother Jones link. However, if it does as you say, BOTH of the links support my point.

It doesn't surprise me. It happens to be the case.

Reality can suck that way.

"The point is that you're passing off a lot of left-wing arguments as foregone conclusions, when the debate is still up in the air."

The only debate is because your team is trying to spin past events to cover their ass.

Per usual.
