Reagan figured that out.

Reagan figured out you could borrow your way to prosperity ... at least for a while.

The average american will be very happy if he can get to the beach in the future on $3 gas, even if he has to look at some drilling way out there that offends the sensibilities of the kennedys and bushes of the world.

The average American better learn real fast that the only way to $3 gas is through global recession and he is not likely to have the money to go to the beach because he will have lost his job.

Offshore drilling will simply serve as a psychological crutch.....reassuring the average American that something is being done. The real work will be developing alternative energy that is cost effective.

"I can look a little left or right and miss the drilling platform and revel in $3 gas along with joe sixpack."

The only objection I have to offshore, well, make it two, is that in geologically active areas, drilling should not be allowed. The casings are going to crack, sooner or later, and cause a spill.

In tourist areas especially, something needs to be done to control the dumping. A big problem on Texas beaches is the trash that gets washed up, much of it from the rigs. Not all, ships contribute a certain amount also. But the rigs are bad about it.
