The thing that they think doesn't make sense is the same thing I think doesn't make sense. Using the cells to power the car.

4.2 Why not put solar panels directly on the car's roof?

Nice idea! But not very practical. After a full sunny day, you will have gathered only enough energy to go a whopping 1/2 mile!

They don't say anything about the much lower requirements to cool the car when its in the direct sun. The solar cell on the roof probably will produce something like 4X the power of the cells on the Prius, but that power will be back home or at whatever other site you install the cells on. Useful for recharging the car's main batteries (which the solar cells on the car would not be), but not so useful for the specific application I'm talking about.

". Solar cells on a Prius roof is essentially an expensive fashion statement."

You must live in Detroit. 8^)

I think the majority of the Priui(?) bought in CA were to get the commute sticker so they could use the commute lane. It really didnt' make sense as they don't save much carbon / gasoline at speed and really shine in traffic.... so most were buying them for a shorter commute without having to take a second rider yet they could brag about being "green."

To many others, it was a fashion statement, especially those who work and live in Palo Alto where it is thick with them.

There is one thing that happens when something new goes on a lot of cars and that is that the manufacturing volumes are staggering. That may ultimately help get the price of solar cells down.
