Not sure where you are getting that the alternative solutions cost more than oil or coal. I presume it's ignorance on your part. Let me enlighten you.

Oil/gas vs electric: The ongoing cost per mile of an electric car is 1 cent. The cost per mile of a gas car is 12 cents. That's with today's technology. The only remaining hurdle is to get the price of the electric cars down, but all that requires is economies of scale, as any Econ 101 student can tell you.

Coal vs wind: Wind power is already at cost parity with coal. Many entrepreneurs and utility companies are getting in on it, because the cost benefit is there. Everyone may think Pickens is crazy, but he's one hell of a rich crazy man. I guarantee you he isn't going big on wind with his own money, just on a quixotic do-gooder adventure. He expects to make money, and lots of it.
