i had a friend that had polo as a kid left in a wheelchair the rest of his life. He was rushed to a hospital to top rated doctor for triple by pass. i was with him when doctor came in and explained he was not a candidate for surgery as he felt he wouldn't survive. My friend doesn't take no easily, and he got on the phone to a person familiar with those doctors in the area who perform triple by pass and he asks .. "who is second best rated in the area for triple by-pass" then he called his wife and told her to get him quickly transfer to the other hospital and set up with the doctor. He had an ambulance within the hour taking him to the other hospital and i was there the next morning with his wife and minister while he was going through triple by-pass.

i asked a few why one doctor had major concerns and the other didn't see any complications.. Oh, there were no complications everything went very well.

I was told the doctors carefully watch the ratings. he didn't want a death or serious complication on his rating list.

Sometimes the rating may be good at a hospital but maybe they refuse the more difficult , lost cause cases. On the other hand some hospitals may have the top doctors because they do take on more difficult procedures.

I am not saying this study is faulty but not all studies tell the complete story.
