good point, maybe a bullet proof glass cover would not add enough weight to off set the advantage, or maybe a sliding steel cover would work if the roof had sensors to detect hail falling on the roof, or maybe the research i heard that they are trying to add solar collectors into paint that could cover the car body and dents won't damage the collectors unlike most likely dents to today's solor panels (glass) will cause eventual shorts.

AC might be a good application for solar panels. They don't generate enough juice for much of anything else. But AC systems, especially ones with "Economy" mode like my Camry had, really don't consume much power at all.

There would be an indirect benefit, though. When you're coasting with your foot off the throttle, the fuel supply to the engine is completely cut *unless* you have the AC on, which kicks up the idle just a bit. So if the idle step-up requirement comes out of the picture, it could improve fuel economy by at least continuing to let cars cut off the fuel when your foot is off the gas but the car is still rolling.
