As for your implication that McCain used the word do describe vietnamese - I'm perfectly fine with the term during the war - it's basic military doctrine to demonize the enemy a bit - makes it easier to deal with the fact your killing them. After the war it's either bitterness or racism - McCain has plenty to be bitter about when it comes to vietnamese treatment and their strict adherence to the Geneva Convention treaty regarding POW's - not at all like the Gitmo hotel guests.

Well, he used the term two weeks ago. Thanks for letting us see how your rationalize voting for someone who is racist.

"One story claims it was picked up by GI's during the Korean war and became an insult in Vietnam."

Except it goes back much further than that.

Although, no doubt, it got a boost during the Korean war.

Eric, slight correction. "Gook" actually means "country," not "person."

Korea - Han-gook
America - Me-gook

"Me-gook" has its roots in Chinese and literally means "big, beautiful country." For America to be named this way and not some Romanized phonetic name like "Ah-Meh-Rick-Ah" should be taken as a compliment, but unfortunately it has also led to the racial slur.

As for McCain, I can understand the bitterness, but the fear is that it will affect his judgement as Commander-In-Chief. Racism? Only if he referred to someone else other than his captors that way.

P.S. - "Gook" also means "soup." Mmmmm, "duk-gook" ...

How would you like to be called a blocky, stocky Korean when you were really a svelte, stylin' Vietnamese?
