Do not forget that shady Iran dealings reportedly helped Reagan win in 2000. Public hostility to Iran was just as great then as now Still Iran supposedly delayed releasing US hostages to help the GOP. So there is ample precedent for some sort of US Iran deal to reduce tensions since both Iran and the GOP would benefit. For example Iran reportedly is a key factor behind the drop in attacks on US troops in Iraq recently. This could be the first in a series of steps to improve relations.
