Gold may hold its own in severe deflations, but it would have to be a global one. If you just get a local deflation here in the US, something else in the rest of the world, then all bets are are of. Gold wouldn't fare well if the rest of the world had strong equity markets, for example.

Deflation is possible, but the fed and treasury are pursuing a gradual weak dollar policy, seems hard to have both that and deflation.
