Well, it was actually much more sophisticated than that. There is a near linear relation between a society's fat consumption and its level of heart disease. So the idea that fat consumption was a prime cause of atherosclerosis was based on a lot of demographic data. They were neither lazy nor stupid. They were just wrong.

They hadn't however thought to look at other factors (like refined carbs) and to look at the Mediterranean diet which was the exception to the above rule.

I would be most interested in seeing his comments on precisely that one issue. The other stuff is pretty much proven IMO.
