It is how it has worked in past elections. Things like the sitting president's job approval influencing the chances of the same party candidate and the overall ranking of the candidate's party are heavy influences on the undecideds.

Neither of which is in McCain's favor.

Which pretty much makes McCain dependent on Obama screwing up. Which isn't a good position to be in.

Correct. Many of the landslide victories in the past have been the result of a few point lead in the national election. The lead is often magnified in the EC.
