Just my opinion but I think a VP choice can hurt a candidate but can in no way help them. Nobody pays the least attention to the VP unless there is something unsavory about them.

That said, Pawlenty will in no way hurt McCain. He's articulate, soft spoken and very likable. Although he's jumped on the climate change bandwagon (pandering to McCain?) he's generally been a decent conservative. Two years ago he fought the majority democrats on taxes and won. This year he fought them on a gas tax increase and lost ( thanks to RINOS ). He's far from perfect but I'd vote for him again without hesitation.
