I have thought that someday where natural gas distribution systems are available every new home may also come with a fuel cell, for generation of most of its needs locally.

And it's quite possible that Fuel Cells are closer to economic feasibility than even I had previously thought. Imagine replacing Platinum with Carbon Nanotubes. Seems this Japanese industrial giant is claiming to have done so, reducing the cost of materials by 90%:
