60 years ago today, on July 26, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed executive order 9981 directing the desegregation of the US Armed Forces. Like Colin Powell, I was 11 years old at the time. I remember That summer, at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, the Democrats put a plank in the platform calling for the desegration of the Armed Forces. The DixieCrats walked out in Anger and formed their own party with Strom Thurmond as their candidate.
