I'm very sorry to hear about your cousin. Obviously, the youngster who found the gun had not had the NRA training in gun safety, which teaches that all guns are always unloaded all the time, and even if you have just unloaded one or ascertained that it is empty you NEVER point it at anyone or anything that you are not willing to destroy.

The NRA is the foremost authority on gun safety and has an Eddy Eagle program that teaches youngsters to avoid guns that they encounter and tell an adult about them. The NRA is the premiere agency for teaching gun safety. It teaches many law enforcement entities gun safety.

When my program conducted firearms training so my people could carry firearms in grizzly country (required by regulation), we had many people fire a gun for the first time. It was pretty amusing to see small women fire a .375 H&H magnum as their first experience. They adapted quite well. In the five years it took to complete my project, we had NO accidents and NO bear killings.

The training was conducted by an NRA instructor.

I have known two families who lost sons to accidental gun death. One a teen who was at a friend's house and they got out the parents' gun and it went off.

But the saddest and most ironic story I know happened to the son of a friend of mine back in Va. He is a doctor and had taken his son to a gunshow down at VMI. THe instructor was showing them a gun, and it accidentally fired- going through the instructor's hand and into the boy, who died in his father's arms.
This was a gunshow and a qualified instructor. I have no idea what went wrong.
