The MER writedowns were pure scamalama from the failure to hint about them when it announced 11 days ago to the way they were presented. The actual writedowns were to 5 or 6 cents on the dollar.

The other thing - mostly missed by the market but its implications are substantial - is that the MER writedown sets the market to which other players should mark because the writedown is an objective measure of value of analogous securities.
