The best auto engines are nowhere near as efficient as big power stations. What do you mean?

AFAIK, the best auto engines are diesels @ about 44% efficiency, which is in fact very near identical to big power stations. Which is precisely why I asked what the heck you were talking about by claiming otherwise.

Hence a hybrid vehicle with a diesel engine is likely more efficient than your claims about power stations and all electric vehicles, because the diesel engine is run at peak efficiency, which happens to be about smack dab the same as your power plant, but lacks the transmission losses. Further, if the hybrid drive also combines a direct transmission from the diesel for cruise conditions, it is likely more efficient, since a mechanical transmission off the engine is more efficient than engine->generator->battery->electric motor->transmission. Quite a bit more efficient as a matter of fact.

Details are important.

EDIT: BTW, an electric motor has zero efficiency at zero speed as well, and the speed vs efficency curve is not flat.
