"by just 50 million excess boys?"

Fifty million may seem like a small number with respect to the total population of the world but when you consider the need to define new roles for 50m men who are extra what do you do. 50 million would be nothing if they just blend in but I doubt that will be the case. They are now coming of age to venture out.

When I ask people, they usually assume it is a Chinese issue only.

"Or are you just talking about China?

When I ask Chinese people they have thought it out differently. "Well," they say, "I suppose those who can afford it will go to America to find a wife." I have seen lots of good ideas for ways to deal with this issue while none of them change the issue of 50m extra, every option moves the location of the issue.

How much is 50m in practical terms? I live in Colorado. The population of this state is less than 5 million. In Denver there are 23,773 males and 21,761 females in the age group of 20 to 24. There are 28,877 males and 24,071 females in the age group of 25 to 30. It looks like we have about 6,000 extra males here in the 30 and under available group. That trend continues until the 50 and older group where it reverses. 50 million extra young men seems huge.

India has a similar birth rate ratio to China as does Korea. Brazil also has a high birth rate of boys to girls. These 'boys' are a product of our attempts to control global population growth and are now in their twenties with the trend continuing.

We've never had extra boys on the planet but we have pushed young men together in ways that make it appear as if they are a separate subculture, usually with violent consequences.

In recent history when we've talked about extra boys we were thinking in numbers less than 100. Gangs of boys who hang out and cause trouble usually evaporate as they age, probably because they get hooked up or land in prison.

We know that convictions in the USA from 1998 to 2000 indicated 2,340,238 people were raped, murdered, and brutalized by their family, friends, and countrymen in the USA. This, I expect to get worse with the extra men issue.

"I'm curious. Do you really expect global changes that drastic, caused by just 50 million excess boys?"

It's not being discussed anywhere, and I get eye roles when I suggest it is significant enough to have global impacts. I see symptoms of changes beginning to take place but I don't see anything too drastic yet.
