Yes the government provides a lot of those things, but that doesn't mean the government should be the main provider for all of them, or even be a provider at all for each and every one.

Then why are they? If a service can be provided better and cheaper by the private sector, it generally moves there. Garbage pick-up used to be exclusively the province of government, but the private sector proved they could do it better and thus was born Waste Management. Support services for troops used to be handled by other military personnel, now they have moved to the private sector. Many prisons are contracted to the private sector.

Government is not evil. They are looking for efficiency like every other part of society. They screw up like every other part of society. Not more, not less.
